Flipkart launches 'Flipkart Xtra' for hiring part-time workers

Bengaluru: E-commerce firm Flipkart has launched a separate marketplace model'Flipkart Xtra' to give flexible earning opportunities to individuals, serviceagencies and technicians. Usually, the e-commerce companies hire a lot of temporary workforce to man their operations during the festive season. This new platform will help the company to hire thousands of individuals, technicians and service agencies across the country ahead of the festiveseason and company's 'BigBillion Days' sale. The Walmart-owned firm said that the platform will also help bolster itssupply chain to ensure seamless and faster delivery of shipments andservice to consumers across India while creating part-time opportunitiesfor individuals.

"As an organisation committed to creating value for all stakeholdersincluding sellers, artisans, MSMEs, kiranas and customers, we areconstantly expanding the scope of our partnership to equitably distributethe benefits of e-commerce. In this endeavour, we introduced numerousinitiatives such as the immensely popular kirana delivery program andare pleased to launch Flipkart Xtra, our service marketplace, to giveflexible earning opportunities to individuals, local stores and evenservice technicians. This is a new disruption in the gig economy spaceand will help individuals find an alternate source of income whilecontributing to the country's economic recovery," said Hemant Badri,senior vice-president and head of supply chain at Flipkart. This is part of company's move to create alternate delivery models underits Flipkart Kirana programme. During last year's festive season, the kirana delivery model fulfilled 10 million shipments.

A report by BCG suggest that the gig economy has the potential toservice up to 90 million jobs in India's non-farm economy alone,contributing an incremental 1.25 percent to India's GDP over the longterm.
